Esher

Site History and Context
This development lies in a quiet residential enclave of Esher, Surrey, a town known for its leafy streets, strong transport connections, and proximity to green spaces such as Sandown Park and Esher Common. The neighbourhood is characterised by detached family homes on generous plots, with mature landscaping that creates a cohesive suburban rhythm.

The road was developed in the mid-20th century and has since evolved through extensions, refurbishments, and occasional redevelopment, giving rise to a varied yet harmonious streetscape. The plot occupies a wide, level plot with a private rear garden and generous frontage, presenting an opportunity for thoughtful intensification and improvement.

We were appointed to transform the existing 1960s bungalow into four distinctive homes, designed to maximise the site’s GDV while respecting the low-lying suburban context. The solution was a staggered arrangement that optimises light, outlook, and privacy, creating a contemporary living environment that feels well-rooted in its setting.

Design Response
The proposal reimagines the site as a terrace of four three-bedroom houses, unified by a simple gabled form and refined brick detailing. The design references the proportions and rooflines of the surrounding suburban context but distils them into a crisp, contemporary expression.

A light-toned brick palette with deep reveals lends warmth and texture, while generous openings balance daylight with privacy. The staggered façades, combined with layered planting, soften the architecture and integrate the development into the wider streetscape enhancing continuity while offering each home a distinct identity.
